Our culturally rich journeys are 100% tailor-made and offer abundant life-enriching experiences. We think small, keep it local, and focus on what is best for our guests, the journey, and the planet. All our dedicated staff work closely with local guides and program directors to choose the hotels, restaurants, concerts, and activities to ensure we deliver the magically orchestrated program you expect. We each accompany a few trips every year to renew old friendships and meet up again with our many return alumni, and we always look forward to meeting new guests.

The curious leading the curious:
Our dedicated network of Field Leaders comprises top-tier experts spanning a broad range of subjects. Born with an innate curiosity about our world, they passionately lead others with a fascination for exploration and learning.
Giving Back:
Our commitment to social responsibility is a core part of our mission. We give back to non-profit organizations whose missions we believe in and support. In the last few years, we have made donations to numerous public radio stations, to the Maasai Girls Rescue Center in Tanzania, the Mama Rosie Children’s Support Center in South Africa, the Monteverde Children’s Cloud Forest Reserve in Costa Rica, and we continue to support individual students and good causes in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the USA.
Our Company Values:
We continually strive for growth and appreciate your support and suggestions. We are far from perfect and have a long way to go to meet our goals. However, we promise that we do care, we do listen, and we ask a lot of questions.
Meet Matthew: Your Globe-Trotting Adventure Maestro
With over 300 journeys across five continents under his belt, Matthew is a master of turning travel into art. From the savannas of Africa to the spice markets of Asia—and even aboard legends like the Orient Express and Trans-Siberian Railway—his adventures read like a passport full of stories.
In 1997, after meeting his wife Danna while guiding in Europe (yes, it’s a love story), the two founded Earthbound Expeditions to craft exceptional trips for NPR affiliates, museums, universities, wineries, and culinary schools.
Matthew’s global credentials? He studied in Copenhagen and Moscow, lived on a kibbutz in Israel (ask him), and later went on to attend graduate school at the London School of Economics. Before Earthbound, he guided expeditions for National Geographic–Lindblad across the Baltics, Asia, and Latin America.
These days, he splits time between South America, Mexico City, Europe, Africa, and Asia—but calls Bainbridge Island, WA, home, where he lives with his Francophile wife and their two globe-savvy kids.
Hear more about his travels on NPR’s Going Places with KNKX
Danna Brumley (pictured left in Paris, France with NPR reporter Eleanor Beardsley) is the co-founder of Earthbound Expeditions. She studied French language and Civilization at the Université d’Aix-Marseille in Aix-en-Provence and Sociolinguistics of the Romance Languages (French and Italian) at La Sorbonne Nouvelle in Paris. So naturally, she became a waitress. (Just kidding). After completing her studies, she lived and worked in Paris for several years, after which she was hired at Rick Steves’ Europe. Danna became the Manager of their popular Tour Program and also worked as a tour guide after training under the devoted tutelage of Matthew, who would later become her husband. Thanks to Earthbound, she has worked and traveled throughout Western and Eastern Europe, Central and South America, Africa, Asia and the Caribbean. She speaks, French, Italian and Spanish and after hours can be caught tutoring French, teaching ESL and salsa dancing. She is married to Matthew Brumley (see above) and they enjoy forcing their children to travel the world (when they’re not embarrassing them with their dance moves).

Holger Zimmer hails from Germany, but don’t expect a typical hometown tale—he spent his formative years roaming across Europe and the U.S., collecting stories like souvenirs. With a background in English literature and drama from Berlin and Dublin, he’s equally at home unpacking Shakespearean soliloquies or navigating the nuances of Irish banter.
A true multi-hyphenate, Holger splits his time between guiding curious minds through historic streets and lending his voice to the airwaves as a broadcast journalist for the likes of BBC, ARD German Radio, ORF Austrian Radio, and RTE Irish Radio. Whether he's leading a walking tour or reporting live, storytelling is always at the heart of what he does.
Also a devoted music enthusiast, Holger plays in a band—though “plays” might be underselling it. Ask him about it… but only if you’re ready for a deep dive into obscure genres, unexpected instruments, and some very entertaining anecdotes.

Meet Darina Krajakova (pictured on the right) – a born tour guide whose guiding career began in the most exclusive venue imaginable: her family’s apartment! Even as a child, Darina was leading “tours” with passion, precision, and probably a touch of flair.
Today, she’s living her dream as a fully licensed guide in Prague and across the Czech Republic. With a deep love of history — from ancient times to the Velvet Revolution of 1989 and everything in between — Darina brings the past to life with her storytelling superpowers.
Though she holds a degree from the College of Economics in Prague, Darina found her true calling in culture, art, and tourism. Her enthusiasm is contagious, and her tours are anything but ordinary.
When she’s not delighting visitors with tales of Prague’s hidden corners and iconic landmarks, Darina is busy behind the scenes in the world of incentive tourism, helping to orchestrate conferences and meetings that showcase the best of the Czech Republic.
Minor Alfaro was born and raised in the vibrant town of Grecia, Costa Rica—though “raised” might be an understatement. Minor Alfaro was born and raised in the vibrant town of Grecia, Costa Rica—though “raised” might be an understatement. By the time most kids were figuring out their times tables, Minor was already a local sensation, charming audiences across the country with his mariachi flair and guitar trio performances on national TV.
A brief adventure on a student exchange in Canada sparked a new passion: travel. Inspired by the idea of turning his love for culture and connection into a career, he returned to Costa Rica and earned his degree from Castro Carazo College. Since then, he’s spent over a decade guiding visitors through Costa Rica’s lush landscapes and rich stories, blending his natural talent for entertaining with a deep love for his homeland.
His energy is infectious, his stories unforgettable, and he insists the best part of his job isn’t the scenery (though it’s spectacular)—it’s the people he meets and the friendships formed along the way.
When he’s not on the road, Minor enjoys a slower rhythm of life back in Grecia with his wife, Amy, and their two kids, Christopher and Jessica—though “quiet” is always relative when you’ve got a heart that beats to the rhythm of marimbas and pura vida.

Liam frequently guides and organizes trips to Asia, Africa, Cuba, Costa Rica, South America and Europe.
When not in the field leading Earthbound Expeditions adventures, Liam can be found on the banks of a rushing river fly fishing or in the mountains skiing or hiking. Or, simply kicking back and reading a great book. His passion for learning, and life is contagious for all who have the pleasure to travel with him.

Originally from Colorado, Jennifer Perry developed a passion for travel early in life, sparked by a high school exchange program in Sydney, Australia. That formative adventure ignited a lifelong appreciation for global cultures and the transformative nature of travel.
She went on to earn a degree in Hospitality, driven by a desire to help others explore the world with the same sense of curiosity and enthusiasm that shaped her own journey. With 22 countries stamped in her passport, Jennifer has watched the sunrise over the Swiss Alps, picnicked beneath the Eiffel Tower, and learned firsthand that salsa in Mexico comes in more varieties (and heat levels) than one could ever imagine.
Her current favorite destinations include England for its charm and history, and Greece for its stunning landscapes and feta obviously. When she’s not globe-trotting, you’ll find her hiking Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, planning her next adventure, or enjoying a quiet moment with family—preferably with a good view and a better glass of wine.

She spent her early years in the mountains of Montana, living off grid in Seward, Alaska and even a six-month stay on the remote Fox Island, where the population was small, and the sense of adventure was huge... After some time in Alaksa, Madyson landed in Summit County, Colorado, where she worked for Copper Mountain – despite not being a skier (yes, she had the ski pass but mostly used it for cafeteria snacks and scenic gondola rides in the summer.) These days, she calls Colorado home-finally unpacked, but still living out of a travel bag often.
At Earthbound Expeditions, she channels her lifelong love of culture and connection into unforgettable adventures and experiences for guests. Her goal? To help guests connect deeply with the world, one meaningful adventure at a time.
Traveling has stolen her heart and if you lose track of her on a trip, just follow the sounds of drums and laughter - she will probably be dancing in a village in Zimbabwe or bargaining for spices in the market. An adrenaline junkie at heart, she spends her free time chasing thrills around the globe - whether it's cage diving with great white sharks or bungee jumping between countries!

One could say that the world is my oyster; I am a wandering Jewess. I was born in Tel-Aviv and raised in Hong Kong. I trained as a theatre actress in Tel-Aviv and received a masters in screenwriting from a London university. I’ve been writing regularly for Israeli media for over a decade. I moved to Berlin in 2010 and was so compelled by the city’s history that I turned it into my livelihood. I divide my time between my two passions—writing and guiding.
